Our sons join Scouts largely to have fun, but we support them as leaders and parents because we want them to grow up to be good people, who associate with other people of good character. "Our foundation is a desire to develop young men and youth -- to teach them correct principles, skills, and core values that will allow them to do what's right -- to remind them of the importance of being honest and fair, of taking good care of themselves, of serving other people." -- Kent Gregersen
Character Connections is a Purpose and a Method of Cub Scouting. Starting in 2001, Scouting revised its handbooks and materials to incorporate the twelve character values -- so whether you're a Cub Scout leader or the parent of a Scout-- you're teaching Character Connections today, whether you realize it or not!
How can a leaderĀ consciously apply the "Method" of Character Connections to his or her den program planning? Character Connections becomes real to parents, leaders, and scouts when the adults gently teach valuable insights to the Scouts as they work through rank achievements and fun activities. Resources and ideas to help leaders and other adults do this are readily available (see the links below.) A list of the twelve Character Connections values, with practical examples, is here (as part of an early overview of the program): http://www.cubroundtable.com/assets/pdf-documents/Character-Connections-data.pdf The twelve Character Connections values are mapped to achievements and electives in the Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos programs here: http://www.cubroundtable.com/assets/pdf-documents/CC-Character-Connections-Chart-13.323A.pdf Methods for reinforcing the twelve character values as part of Cub Scout ceremonies, games, service projects, and outdoor activities are here: http://www.cubroundtable.com/assets/pdf-documents/Character-Connections-Outdoor-Grid.pdf Resources for character development in the family are: http://www.bu.edu/education/caec/files/10tips.htm http://www.goodcharacter.com/ Other Scouting resources include: Cub Scout Leader Book, Chapter 4 Flyer "Cub Scout Character Development" (BSA 13-323A) BSA Family Book (BSA 33012) BSA "Youth Frontier" (BSA 33620) Values of Men & Boys in America Pamphlet (BSA 2-121)
