Cub Scout Packs in the Austin area typically camp at the following State Parks:

Other facilities used for Cub Scout overnight camping include:

(Sites with a * are relatively farther away.)

In recent years, Pack 166 has camped at:

  • Canyon of the Eagles (Fall 2007)
  • Bastrop SP (Spring 2007)
  • Garner SP (Fall 2006)
  • Colorado Bend SP (Spring 2006)
  • Guadalupe River SP (Fall 2005)
  • Lake Somerville SP (Spring 2005)
  • Inks Lake SP (Fall 2004)
  • Palmetto SP (Spring 2003)

Pack campouts must follow the Guide to Safe Scouting, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • At least one adult on a pack overnighter must have completed the Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) course. BALOO standards (or better) are the standard for Pack campouts.

  • There is, to the best of our knowledge, currently no up-to-date list of locally approved camping locations in the Capital Area Council. Potential campgrounds should be evaluated using the Pack Overnight Site Approval Form, No. 13-508.

  • A local tour permit should be filled out, turned in, and approved by the local council service center (that is, the Capital Area Council office) two weeks before any scheduled outdoor or overnight activity.

  • Scouts should be "buddied up" at the beginning of the campout, and should only leave the camping area if they are with their buddy, and have gotten approval to leave beforehand from their adult leader.

  • Adults may share sleeping facilities with their own children ONLY. If parents have arranged to assume care of children other than their own, the children should share separate sleeping facilities nearby.

  • Married couples may share housing -- no unmarried couples should share a tent on a Pack campout.
  • Adults should leave alcohol and tobacco at home.
  • Electronic toys, radios, and the like are also distractions that should be left in the car or at home for the duration of the campout.
  • Swimming and Boating is permitted only within the guidelines of the Aquatics Safety portion of the Guide (including Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat). Archery and BB-gun shooting are not conducted at the Pack level.

The adult(s) responsible for planning the campout should create a Pack Overnighter Agenda/Camping Activity Worksheet (including contingency plans for bad weather) guided by Appendix T of the BALOO manual.

Personal equipment (bring/don't bring) lists, directions, maps and meal/cooking guidance should be finalized and distributed to the Pack at least a week prior to the campout.
